Talk Garden #3!! ~Lost Memories of Shichi-Go-Sen~
The November podcast has been uploaded 😃♡ This time's talk topic is "Anecdotes of Shichi-Go-San"!! ️ Funnily enough, almost all the messages I received from everyone were full of "I don't remember". That made laugh🤣🤣I'm sorry, who am I to judge? I honestly don't remember a lot either, I guess we were all too young when we celebrated Shichi-Go-San 😂 I wonder if we should increase the age of celebration from 7(Shichi), 5(Go) and 3(San) to 12 and 15. *laughs* This way, it would be much more memorable 😂 Of course there were also some people who said that they remembered everything perfectly. Some of you mentioned that you remember crying a lot. Very relatable to be honest~ *laughs*
As a small gift to everyone whose message I read in the podcast, I made a handmade glass deco sticker of Shark-chan!\\٩( 'ω' )و // I had a vague idea that a sticker would be a good gift to give as a thank you, so after doing some research, I finally decided on these glass deco stickers! This is the completed set of my Shark-chan glass deco sticker🦈🦈🦈🦈💕A small gift! You can draw whatever picture you like on the film sheet by using the paint, then let it dry and it's done. It takes about 8 hours to dry the whole thing, but I let it dry for about two days just to be sure. Shark-chan is being mass-produced... (I also made one with some odd colouring.) When I tried sticking it on my Mac, the shark looked a bit wrinkled. But these are so much fun to make! 😳✨The glass deco paint is released by the same company that makes the popular Arabic Yamato glue. According to the official description, magical paint is a mixture of paint and glue that turns into colourful and shining stickers and looks like stained glass after drying😊 I didn't know about the existence of these stickers at all until I researched it but they seem to be quite popular😳When I went to Daiso, they also sold paint for this 😳From now on, I want to try more different kinds of drawings! ! \\٩( 'ω' )و // So, everyone whose message I read, please wait patiently for your Shark-chan sticker to arrive!
And I have some news! For the fan club event that will be held after the "Wakana Classics 2023 ~Winter Party~" on December 15th, we have decided to do a poll for the song that I will be singing during that particular section! I started my classical concerts back in 2020 with the "Wakana Covers ~Anime Classics~" album. I thought I would let everyone choose from a selection of songs from this album😉Click here for the poll! ・Yasashisa ni tsutsumareta nara ・Inochi no Namae ・Kimi no Todoke ・Get Wild ・Yume no Yukue
Please let me know which song you would like to hear! ! ! ♪♪♪\(^o^)/♪♪♪ Lastly, here's a picture of my Gazania which bloomed again due to the abnormally warm temperatures(?)🌼It's blooming so beautifully 😳💕I'm so happy ♡
Well, I hope you enjoy the new episode! This time it's about 40 minutes long *laughs*Please relax and listen 😊

What was Tatiana’s relationship with N Rodianov?
Hello there! Thank you for your question and I am sorry for the late reply!
Nikolai Nikolaevich Rodionov was Tatiana’s favourite officer on the Standart. The girls naturally had their favourite officers: Olga’s was Pavel Voronov, Maria's was Nikolai Demenkov, Anastasia’s was Georgii Taube. Some of these were obviously crushes, whereas some were just close friendships.
When Tatiana was suffering from typhoid, Alix sent notes to her to comfort her and give advice. In one of these notes she specificallly mentions she saw Rodionov. So judging by this he was definitely a family favourite and/or Alix knew that would cheer up dear Tatiana.
Here are some photos of them together:
And this super cute one of them sharing a coat to keep cosy!
From Tatiana’s diary and letters - Rodionov is almost always referred to as 'N.N.' (Nikolai Nikolaevich):
'29 May [Old Style, her birthday] Thursday [1914]. ...I played 2 singles sets [of Tennis] with N.N., both of which he won... I played 3 sets with N.N. against Papa and Olga, won two lost one. N.P. arrived. We had tea there. After that I had a rest and wrote telegrams... I sat between N.N. and N.P. It was very good. After that, there was a cinematograph in the dining room. I sat with N.N. on the divan. We went back home at 12. It was so awfully good. They drank my health three times at the table. So sweet and cosy. To be with such dear friends.' - Full diary entry here, translated by the wonderful Helen Azar
'10 January. [1916]. ...One of these days N.N. Rodionov is supposed to arrive, and I am very happy. We have not seen him for almost a year...'
Letter from Tatiana to Countess Zinaïda Tolstaya:
'1 March, 1918 Tobolsk. ...Write to me again. I love receiving your letters. Do you know where N.N. is at the moment? I know that his friend was killed in Simferopol and he was there too...'
She also wrote occasionally in her diary about speaking with him on the telephone, something that OTMA did with their favourite officers, mostly in the evening.
She didn’t write about him quite as passionately or often as Olga did about Pavel Voronov or AKSHV, so I don’t know whether you would consider it to be a ‘crush’, or just a particular favourite :) She sometimes called him 'dear N.N.', which could just be Russian endearment expressed in many of their letters and diaries, or something more romantic.
From the photos that exist of him, he seems to have been close to all the girls, posing with them affectionately, holding their hands, etc. They all write about him in their diaries fondly. Judging purely off photos, he seems to have been extra close with Tatiana and Anastasia. There are some super cute photos of him and Anastasia, I’ll attach them below! You’re pretty much guaranteed to find him in all their albums!
Rodionov survived the Revolution, despite staying loyal to the Imperial Family, which would have placed him in considerable danger. At some point he emigrated, and he passed away in 1962 in France, aged 76. He would have been 24 in 1910, and therefore his mid 20s during his time with the Romanovs.
Also, random fun fact, his hand writing was strikingly similar to Tatiana’s! The same very sloped, pointy text.
Hope this was helpful! To conclude, I don't know exactly whether Tatiana saw Rodionov as a favourite officer or more of a crush. She was more reserved than Olga, so her not writing about him like Olga did with her crushes is understandable when you consider her personality. But she clearly was very fond about him, and didn't forget him even in the last year of her life.

Happy birthday, Faye Wong: 4 of the Hong Kong Cantopop star’s career and personal highlights (2023)
As Faye Wong turns 54, we look back at how she captured people’s hearts in Asia by being herself and focusing on one thing: her music
She had sold nearly 10 million albums by 2000 and has starred in several movies, including Chungking Express, for which she won a best actress award
by Nicole Tan
No one can say Faye Wong didn’t do it all her own way.
Born in Beijing in 1969, the singer and actress – who turns 54 today – went from not knowing a word of Cantonese to becoming a beloved Hong Kong music star to being honoured by Time magazine as one of the “divas of pop”.
She’s known for avoiding the spotlight and keeping a limited public presence, yet Wong’s undeniable talent has cemented her as one of Asia’s most popular divas, one that will be remembered for decades to come.
Here are some of her career milestones and major achievements.
She claimed her place in the Guinness World Records
Wong was one of the first women to dominate Hong Kong’s music industry.
By 2000 she had sold about 9.7 million copies of her 20 studio albums, making her, according to Guinness World Records, the bestselling female Cantopop artist of all time.
2. She was never one for spectacle – and it still paid off
Whereas other singers would put on elaborate concerts filled with dancing and extravagance, Wong focused on delivering one thing to audiences: her music.
Fans flocked to her performances to be mesmerised by her nightingale voice, one that brought her accolades including 2004’s best female artist in Hong Kong and Taiwan, awarded by the Top Chinese Music Awards.
Her 2003 concert tour, “No Faye No Live”, sold 30,000 tickets within three days, setting a Hong Kong record at the time.
3. She remained unapologetically herself, even in the limelight
Wong drew praise – and controversy – for her uncurated and authentic public image.
Fans admired her for being a “modern” woman, independent and unbothered by what A-list celebrities or agents might have to say.
She married Beijing rock star Dou Wei in 1996 in what the public deemed an “unlikely” pairing. Today, many criticise her relationship with actor Nicholas Tse – which they rekindled in 2014 after dating from 2000 to 2003 – but Wong remains unapologetic in her pursuit of love.
4. She also left her mark on Hong Kong cinema
Wong starred in several movies, including Wong Kar-wai’s 1994 comedy-drama Chungking Express, 2002’s Chinese Odyssey, and 2004’s 2046.
Her portrayal of Faye in Chungking Express, a young woman with an unusual approach to romance, won her the best actress award at the 1994 Stockholm Film Festival.
Although Wong maintains a low profile, the career she has built for herself over the span of almost three decades is rediscovered time and time again today. It is this legacy that one of her daughters, 26-year-old singer Leah Dou, looks to carry on.

hi!
i’ve been away from this beloved hellscape for the most part for like a month. life is just so busy! the queue has been chugging along but tumblr has been more like stop by for 5 minutes, see a post and put it in drafts to tag later, never actually get it tagged, come back 3 days later and drop 2 more reblogs into drafts, fail to add anything to the queue, rinse and repeat. my drafts folder usually has 5-10 posts in it. right now? 206. help.
a few fandom highlights of the last month:
darlingest squishface leader sunggyu had a comeback and he remains the singer i need at least one dozen more albums from. never stop singing gyu
gyu’s album continues infinite’s streak of having THE best album intros. no one does mood-setting like they do
my hobgoblin son lee taemin and i both celebrated birthdays this week
shinee had an incredible comeback. so many show wins! i’ve listened to basically nothing else in the car for weeks
the behind the scenes making of HARD hheeeeeuuuuggghhhhh LEE JINKI’S VOICE
infinite, my always and forever boys, announced their first comeback in 5 years
i repeat INFINITE IS HAVING A COMEBACK. i haven’t been this excited in AGES
CUE FIREWORKS
CUE SCREAMING CRYING THROWING UP. RAINBOWS. KITTENS. SPARKLES.
sky and prapai from lita got married yesterday! and apparently i’m going to watch yet another mame show as a result because nuea is adorable and feels the same way i do about gyms. (also yiwa is hilarious like what is this about for you, girl??) sure why not! i’m here for a good time, not an unproblematic time
i became mutuals with a few more kinnporsche friends (hello!!!) and i remain so happy at all the posting kp fans are still doing a year after the show aired. such a funny and clever group of people. might be time for my third rewatch.
i’m almost always on desktop and apparently there are awful dashboard changes coming my way? i have not been hit with it yet but am currently making burnt offerings to the xkit gods so whatever nonsense happens i’ll be able to fix it immediately.

hmm lets say The Doors - Soft Parade for the album ask game?? ✨ (underrated yes it isss)
Oh Gosh, the one album by them that I didn't buy and I don't want it - although there are some good tracks, but I usually don't listen to it. I actually had to listen to it again to give you answers, so without further ado <3
1. Favourite and least favourite track?
"Runnin' Blue" would be my favorite. I don't know, it's just so catchy, plus the intro always gets me. Morrison just sings without any instruments, his voice makes wonders to me <3
Now to the least favorite, I thought I will go with "Do It", but Densmore's drumming is fantastic in this one, so nope. So I will go with "Wishful Sinful" then. It's too much of an orchestral piece, just doesn't fit in and it's kind of boring to me on the long run. I never skipped it, because I don't listen to this album often, but like, boring in the long run XD
2. Side A or B? (for later releases: first half or second half; for doubles: A, B, C or D?)
Oh, definitely side B and that includes: "Wild Child", "Runnin' Blue", "Wishful Sinful" and "The Soft Parade". Excluding "Wishful Sinful", this side has almost all of my favorite tracks on this album <3
3. Thoughts on the cover art/packaging?
It's nothing special, like comparing it to the third album, for example, it ain't nothing special. Maybe if the band was a lot closer it would be better, but like, I don't know. Even the font isn't good. You just gotta look at any other album of theirs and the covers are better XD
4. Are any of the tracks important/meaningful to you? Why?
I don't think there are any? Wait, let me read the lyrics XD Nope, there aren't any, I think I like those few songs for the melody and Jim's voice mostly <3
5. When did you first hear the album?
Oh God, was it when I just listened to all of their album at one day? It was definitely around December 2022. 22nd of December - my mom's birthday! It was when I've decided to listen to one album of their per day. Just one listen to get the general feel. It was when I was getting into older music, just before my obsession with The Doors truly started.
6. Have your thoughts on the album changed since you first heard it?
Oh yeah, they did. I was just getting used to their sound and you know, this album is far different from the rest and I liked it quite a lot, just to then realize that it's boring in the long run and doesn't have the feeling that for example "Waiting For The Sun" or "L.A. Woman" brings in when I listen to them. So the opinion went from "Hey, this is good!" to "Eh, I can live without it".
7. Are you a fan of other works by the artist/in the genre?
Of course! "Waiting For The Sun" is my favorite The Doors album. I have this one certain day during each month when I listen to it and feel myself calming down while each song plays. "Love Street", "Summer's Almost Gone", "Wintertime Love", "Yes, The River Knows", "Five To One" those are the few I'm mad about - I love "Yes, The River Knows" so much that I learned how to play the vocal melody on classic guitar <3 You can only imagine how happy I was when I've saw it at the record store. I took it without any thoughts, just bought it right away!
8. A lyric you like from the album
Definitely the intro to "Runnin' Blue"
Poor Otis dead and gone Left me here to sing his song Pretty little girl with the red dress on Poor Otis dead and gone
It's just so catchy, the rest of the song is wacky in a way, but like the line "Pretty little girl with the red dress on" is so well done, it just gets into your ear and doesn't want to leave, you know
9. How did you discover the album?
Been listening to one The Doors album per day and I just played it because it was the next in queue. Nothing much of a big discovery I know, but what can you do? XD
10. Do you own/would you like to own a physical copy of the album?
I had like two chances to get it at the record store and even if I thought about buying it, seeing it there for the first time, there's always another album I want more. Plus, I think I can live without it. I mean, I only have to get the first The Doors album to have all of them at home that I like. So yeah, I don't want it that much.
#thank you for asking#it was fun <3#also I had to listen to the album again#that was a nice trip back to 2022#ask corner

So I'm stealing this from @tayloralisonswift and you should definitely check out their version, but I'm going to listen to and rank all of Taylor's songs album by album (and then maybe her non album songs at the end). You can also see my debut rankings and what I've changed here + my Fearless and Speak Now rankings here and here.
So with that in mind, it's RED's turn. The only thing to note before we start is that (barring the vault tracks of course) I will be ranking the OG tracks (a reminder that I own all the CDs here before you come at me for that) as they are my preferred ones. Also I'm gonna be real, RED haters, look away. RED was the album that turned me from a casual fan to a stan, so this is not the ranking for you lmao.
State Of Grace + Acoustic: Still my favourite intro to this day. Much like Forever And Always, both versions of this song are equal to me but elicit different emotions. Never not a good time when I listen to them. The only thing stopping this (and a lot of the album) being 10/10 is that I'm reserving that for my stan song from each album. 9.5/10.
Red: Dare I say this is an underrated track? It often flip flops with Evermore for my favourite title track of Taylor's. I still yearn for the Red/I Forgot That You Existed mashup that I made in my head to appear on Eras tour lmao. Overall just a great track. 9/10.
Treacherous: This coming out in 2012 at age 17 did numbers on me ngl. 2022 me also related to it just that little bit too much for my liking lmao. But again, another amazing track with incredible lyrics and production. 9.5/10.
I Knew You Were Trouble: Unironically I think this song has her best production to date for what it was trying to achieve. Like it is 'the worst part about it wasn't losing him, it was losing me' in music form, and though she had become more and more pop each album from debut, to me, this was the ultimate jump into pop/non country music. Also I love that she confirmed it was a manipulation/abuse track down the line because it had always been that for me. 9.5/10.
All Too Well + 10 minute version: I considered making these two separate entries because they feel like different songs to me in terms of like how I relate to them, but ultimately I'd give them the same score anyway. I do also want to note here that I think all of the choices that were made for RED were the right ones and the thing I wish I had access to most in the history of Taylor's career is a full picture of when each song made the final album. Because between her saying that Scott thought it was done well before she did and her saying Better Man was almost the track 5 of this album, I would die to see the timeline. I also think that the 10 minute version is the perfect closer to TV. Anyway I know a lot of people think this song is overrated, but I would argue that it's correctly rated and it is simply that other songs deserve to be as highly rated but are not. 9.5/10.
22: Always a good time. Me having cut off (redacted) days before my 23rd birthday at a time when I was at one of my lowest points and partying the most really elevated the song for me lmao. Also I know people bag on the tracklisting of this album because this is a 'too happy' song to put between All Too Well and I Almost Do, but what do you mean your friends didn't take you out when you were heartbroken to try and forget about the heartbreak just for you to feel that heartbreak again when you get home and are alone? But again, always a fun time. 8.5/10.
I Almost Do: Not my favourite from the album, but when it hits, it hits and still well and truly in my upper ranking for Taylor's discography as a whole. 8/10.
We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together: And now we reach my second favourite trio of this album. Having the 3 on/off again songs back to back to show the anger (WANEGBT), denial/ignoring of the red flags/good times/why she wants to fight so hard for it (Stayx3) and ultimate depression/acceptance that it's do or die (The Last Time) is just chef's kiss for me. Like this is what I mean when I say that RED as an album is repetitive but in a good way that works, because these three songs tell the same story, just from different perspectives. Outside of that, the music video for this being shot in one take is still super cool to me. Overall a great song. 8/10.
Stay Stay Stay: An underrated and misunderstood song in my honest opinion. Like I said, I don't see it as a sweet song, I see it as holding up a white flag to make the red ones rosy because you would rather wear rose coloured glasses than lose the person. Genuinely, it's a very sad song in my honest opinion, but a great and necessary one for the album. 8/10.
The Last Time: This still rivals Exile and Evermore as my favourite Taylor vocal collab tbh. It's been relatable one too many times in my life and has been my go to song for a lot, so yeah I just love it deeply. 9.5/10.
Holy Ground: This is that track that I feel everyone loves more than I do, but I still love it. I'm also so glad that we got the piano version in the Lover era because I love that just as much. 8.5/10.
Sad Beautiful Tragic: My stan song for the album! This song has been a consistent in my life and really helped me through the death of a friend in my teens but also has a sweet spot due to other meanings my loved ones have had for it. Just overall an amazing song. 10/10.
The Lucky One: This is still my favourite song Taylor has written about fame. Her writing it in Australia also warms my heart a little. I don't have much else to say about it but yeah, it's a great song. 8/10.
Everything Has Changed: I was such a big Ed Sheeran fan when this song came out so it holds a sweet spot in my heart. I don't listen to it nearly as much as I should, but I still love it. 8/10.
Starlight: I think this is the song that I have the most fun with when listening to RED. The second verse is perhaps one of my favourite she's ever written and sends me back to such a specific memory of my own. I really should listen to the song more. 9/10
Begin Again: This gives me everything I feel I'm missing from Electric Touch tbh. Like obviously not the pop rock sound, but the emotion of new beginnings and wanting to give happiness with another person one last try. Also listening to this on a Wednesday (which it is for me at the time of writing this) always makes me unnecessarily happy lmao. 9/10.
The Moment I Knew: Love everything about this song. It's relatable (too much so, having this happen 3 times with 3 different people 3 years in a row was... not great lmao), its production is dramatic, it's lyrically great and it's always a fun time showing it to people who haven't heard it before and seeing their reaction to the birthday line. All up a fave. 9.5/10.
Come Back Be Here: Another song that I relate to the friend that passed at their own hand in my teens. Getting the Come Back Be Here/Daylight (a self love song for me) mashup at Eras really made me emotional and will always be something I cherish. All up, another love for me. 9/10.
Girl At Home: The funniest thing Taylor could have ever done is sing this on Melbourne n1 (iykyk). She did not, but I still love the song and it was my 2022 anthem. 9.5/10.
Ronan: So fun fact, this was the song that turned me from a casual fan to a stan. I know I said I was reserving 10/10s for one track per album, but given this has helped me through everything from the loss of friends to death to the loss of my sister via estrangement, this is going to be my exception. I yearn for the day the Ronan/Never Grow Up mashup I made in 2015 gets played on tour (joking in that I know it won't, but god would I love it). 10/10.
Better Man: Lyrically I love this song. Production wise? I wish she had made it like the early 2017 performance she did of it. Personally I do like Little Big Town's version better because of that, but I still love this version. 9/10.
Nothing New: This is one of those songs that if it came out/I had it in 2018, it would have been my everything. But it did not so I find it quite boring even if I understand that it's a sister song to The Lucky One. 5/10.
Babe: I am a 'what about your promises, promises' lover and prefer this version to Sugarland's. Sugarland's music video basically being a remake of Not The Only One's by Sam Smith lives rent free in my head for... reasons, but is among my favourites she's done (on the most part all of the RED related ones are my favourites. I just really like the style that was used for all of them lmao). All up a sad bop. 8/10.
Message In A Bottle: If this had come out on the OG album, it would have been my forever fave. Like I still love it, but god did it take me back to meeting (redacted) in America when I was 18. All up, an underrated bop. 8.5/10.
I Bet You Think About Me: My favourite of the vault tracks. Not much else to say, I just love everything about it. 9.5/10.
Forever Winter: I'll be honest, I like the demo that leaked more than the album version. But I still love it and have it among my most listened to vault tracks. 8.5/10.
Run: A cute number. Not my favourite but still great. 8/10.
The Very First Night: A grower for me because I wasn't fussed on it at all when it first came out, but very fun. 8/10.
Final score: 244.5/280 - 87.3%

The Ledge #584: Birthday Week!
When I put together each and every episode of The Ledge, I try really hard not to repeat myself too much. If I play a new single one week, the next I'll more than likely air a b-side or album track. Certain songs do end up appearing in multiple shows, but more than likely due to whatever themes I've selected.
That fact has always been in the back of my mind whenever I put on birthday shows. Obviously, during my birthday week I want a show of nothing but my favorite songs of all time, but at the same time I don't want to repeat that same show each and every year. But it dawned on me earlier today that repeating myself once a year is no big deal! Who remembers what I aired a year ago?
Plus, honestly, while I have not doublechecked, I'm sure this year's birthday celebration of my favorite songs is quite unlike previous editions. My tastes are ever-evolving. Some artists have emerged as new favorites. Others have maybe dropped down a peg or two. Plus, I'll admit to purposely selecting different tunes by perennial favorites. Let's be real. I can play almost any song by bands like The Clash or The Ramones...or almost every band in tonight's show.
As for the "52 weeks of Teenage Kicks", I've got a relative rrity from Hagfish. Originally released on 1995's Happiness EP, it also appeared on European versions of their second album, Hagfish Rocks Your Lame Ass. (And since this was my birthday show, I ended the episode with The Undertones original.
And like I do every week, I must again plead with y'all for more versions of "Teenage Kicks". If you are a musician, or have any contact with artists that could record their own take on the classic, please contact me!
CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE SHOW!
1. Hagfish - Teenage Kicks
2. The Kinks - I'm Not Like Everybody Else
3. Rolling Stones - Loving Cup
4. The Pretty Things - L.S.D.

Read the Daily Journal from my Celtic Invasion of Loch Lomond.
Oh! Make sure you subscribe to Sci Fi Pub Songs & Stories. I’m sharing songs I recorded on a camping trip last fall. They’re kinda romantic too!
8:47 - COME ADVENTURE WITH ME…
Is the title of my next album. I did a Kickstarter for it about this time last year. It was a huge success, fully funded a few days into the campaign. I gave myself until July to actually release the album to supporters. But that’s not good enough. I’m gonna try to release the digital music to supporters by my birthday, March 17.
Will that happen? We shall see.
Right now, I have 8 songs fully completed. I have four more that are being edited. So I’m well on the way to completing it by that date. There are several other tracks. I still haven’t come up with a good album pin idea. But I’m hopeful I can figure that out in the next few weeks.
But I am super excited that the project is almost done. Because I have three other albums to work on: Dancing With Hobbits, Another Faire to Remember by Brobdingnagian Bards, and whatever the next album will be… I have an idea or two…

15:06 - WHEN SHE HELD ME IN HER ARMS
In 2001, the Brobdingnagian Bards were performing at a lot of faires. Kansas City Renaissance Festival was one of the biggest and the coolest gig we had booked to that date. They paid us to fly to KC from Austin, Texas for several weekends. They put us up in a hotel. We hung out with 3 Pints Gone. We made a lot of new fans. We were even hired to perform at a wedding.
I don’t remember all of the details surrounding the writing of “When She Held Me In Her Arms”. But that festival stands out in my mind. I remember writing the song in the hotel after a long day at faire. It flowed out of me, filled with so much hope, love, and romance about finding true love and never turning back.
Andrew and I recorded it shortly after that. We went into the studio. The Bards recording was decent enough, but the performance was way too fast. So it did not end up on A Faire to Remember or Songs of Ireland. But when I was trying to put together a compilation of music so we could book some wedding gigs, I added that song to A Celtic Renaissance Wedding. But I was never really happy with it as a recording.
Nevertheless, I continued to sing the song over the years. When I met Gwen in 2009, I sang it to her at MileHiCon in Denver. She was living in Virginia at the time. But she flew to Colorado to be with me for that con.
It took another five years before I recorded it again, and some years after that before I dug up the recording and the guitar additions by Daniel I Briggs before I finally sent it to Sam Gillogly to add fiddle. That was when I knew the song was finally done. I love the result.
Best part about it for me is when I come to that line about “twenty years later I’ve not regretted a day.” Then I realize that Gwen and I are now on 13 years of marriage. Wow! Mind blown! And yup, no regrets!
Here’s the lyrics: When She Held Me In Her Arms
Lyrics and music Marc Gunn
Through a market, I wandered and prayed That I'd find me a woman I might marry some day. Well, I never dreamed when I prayed that prayer That the woman I longed for was standing there.
When she held me in her arms that night, I held her close, and I held her tight. And I swore that day forth, I'd love her all of me life. When she held me in her arms that night.
She smelled of the sweetest lilac skin. And I admit it now it drew me in Oh, her voice cast a spell I could not disobey. Every word was a river that swept me away.
Oh, the market became a more beautiful place: The flowers more fragrant, and the clothing all lace. And her eyes, oh, her eyes! They begged me to stay And twenty years later, I've not regretted a day.

23:55 - THINGS NO ONE TOLD ME ABOUT RUNNING
I started running right before the pandemic closed everything down in 2000. It made a huge impact on my life. But I also realized that most everything I knew about running was wrong!
You don’t have to warm up before running. I know. This sounds like sacrilege. But I don’t like flexing and stretching before I run. Instead, I just start walking. That’s all the warm up I need.
You don’t have to run constantly. Just because you say you’re going for a run doesn’t mean you are running non-stop. It’s tiring. So I walk. Some days I walk a LOT. Other days a rarely stop. But almost always walk on my “run”.
Run up hills for an extra workout. One of my running mates set this idea in my head. You can’t walk up a hill. You have to run up it. Hills are now my favorite part of my run.
Shoes don’t need to be tight. I spent the first year trying to get my shoes to fit “right”. I tightened them, cut off the circulation. It was miserable. Now, they are fairly snug. But not tight.
Get good running shoes. That really helps a lot, especially if you’re running on pavement, which is the easiest, most-accessible way to run. You’ll also need to replace them at least once a year depending on how much you run.
Listen to podcasts to stay entertained while running. My biggest challenge with running before I got AirPods was staying entertained. Podcasts make a huge difference. Most days, I enjoy the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. But many days, I use it as a time to catch up on whatever my podcast of the moment is.
Some days it’s okay just to walk. Going back to not running constantly. If you’re tired or just uninspired. It’s okay to walk. Take it easy. Stroll. You’ll get back to it soon enough.
Running is the best way to lose weight. I’ve never been overweight. But when I finally started running, the aerobic activity is what finally got me in control of how much I weighed.
Wireless Headphones are the best. One of my excuses for not exercising years ago was those dang dangly headphone wires. When I finally got wireless headphones, my world was changed.
Humidity matters for temperature. This morning the temperature was 39 degrees. But with 78% humidity, it felt like 31 degrees. What a big difference whether you’re hot or cold.
How should you dress? Again humidity matters. But here’s a rough guide for cold weather. Wear short sleeves and shorts when the temperature is in the 60s. Long sleeve and shorts in the 50s. Long sleeve and long pants in the 40s. And of course, make sure your head is covered and maybe an extra shirt in the 30s.
You can read more of my thoughts on it in my blog.
35:35 - “Naked” by Marc Gunn from Camping Trip 2022
38:27 - ARBOR DAY IN FEBRUARY?
National Arbor Day is celebrated in April. What you may not know is that each state celebrates Arbor Day from January to May depending on the regional season for planting trees.
The State of Georgia celebrates its Arbor Day on the third Friday in February.
It is a day to reflect on the importance of trees in our state and across our nation. Scientific research is increasingly adding to the evidence that trees are essential to global environmental health. So go plant a tree, play outside, enjoy the beauty of trees, create art inspired by trees, or honor trees in any way that pleases you!
That's all according to Trees Atlanta. When is your state's Arbor Day?
Oh! Mark your calendar for April 29. I’m going back to The Lost Druid. But I’m not doing it the regular way. I’m biking there. If you’re able to bike there or carpool or reduce your own environmental impact that day, as well, that’d be brilliant. Come join us!
If you love this episode, then share it with a friend. You can send one of the MP3s from your EP of the Month or just ask them to listen to the show. Maybe tell them one thing that really inspired you. Just spread the word.

Sent from my iPhone Some songs transcend time and every other social construct you can imagine, achieving cult-classic status. And then there are songs that go even deeper than that, crossing generational lines and embedding themselves into the fabric of our very existence. These are the songs that everyone from your family’s matriarch to the youngest child knows the words to or moves to the accompanying dance, or even just enough of the melody to hum along.
While we can’t say every single Black person in the country jams these tunes, we feel pretty confident that these songs are known far and wide by a plethora of melanated music lovers. To kick off Black Music Month, here are 20 songs that almost every Black person knows.
1. "Before I Let Go" by Maze featuring Frankie Beverly
When Frankie Beverly and Maze came together, their objective was to make music. They likely had no idea they would become an everlasting staple of the entire Black community. This song, a single off the band’s fifth album, is more than 40 years old. But thanks to family cookouts, Black folks are ever ready to tilt back their heads and belt out a harmonious “Gooooooooo” like the song was gifted as a birthright.
2. "Can We Talk" by Tevin Campbell
If there’s one thing Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds can do, it’s write a culture-grabbing song and lay it on the perfect musician to bring it to life. This 1993 Tevin Campbell hit is no different. DJs at clubs and other events across the country can guarantee that when this tune is played, they can drop the record altogether and a sea of Black folks will keep on singing in unison.
3. "Rock With You" by Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson could very well land dozens of songs on this list from his days singing alongside his brothers right on through his extensive catalog. This song released in 1979, however, has not only transcended decades; it’s also been sampled in at least 99 songs since its release extending its shelf life far beyond anyone’s expectations.
4. "Let's Get it On" by Marvin Gaye
No barbecue is complete without an elder blaring something by Marvin Gaye. And, no, it matters not the age ranges at the event, this song will be played. Released in 1973, this cultural fave features an opening note that gets everybody ready to holler out the words, however inappropriate they may be for the occasion.
5. "Weak" by SWV
When these three sisters with flawless vocal abilities joined together as a group, the fruits were a variety of chart-topping hits, but none bigger than this now 30-year-old song. It’s the ultimate sing-a-long anthem and even spent quite some years as a talent show favorite.
6. "Stomp" by God's Property
Let’s keep it all the way real; Kirk Franklin is likely responsible for the saving of many souls through his electrifying way of reaching the people with gospel and inspirational music. This song became an instant hit in 1997 and remains a staple of Black music today.
7. "September" by Earth, Wind & Fire
Earth, Wind & Fire could be a genre of their own the way they make soul-stirring jams that live in the culture. This catchy 1978 classic has indefinitely imprinted the date Sept. 21 on the hearts of music fans.
8. "Back Dat Azz Up" by Juvenile
Want to see someone’s backside moving without intention? This 1998 New Orleans song took over the country when it dropped as a single to take over for the ’99 and the 2000.
9. "This Is How We Do It" by Montell Jordan
There’s no way Montell Jordan could think that singing about his Friday evening activities would become the cultural phenomenon that it has become, but since 1995, folks can’t wait to tell you how they do it. And, shout out to him for endorsing the use of designated drivers.
10. "Happy Birthday" by Stevie Wonder
Stevie Wonder himself is a national treasure belonging to the Black delegation. Every single one of his songs is an intergenerational favorite. However, we cannot and will not ignore the way this man completely changed the way Black folks sing the birthday song. Written in tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. and released in 1981, the song not only became a hit but also helped to make MLK Day a federal holiday, as Blavity previously reported.
11. "Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince
It is perhaps one of the most well-known facts of Black culture that it is not officially summer until the radio station plays this 1991 song.
12. "Never Too Much" by Luther Vandross
Luther is another one of those artists who has given the culture countless anthems. But if we’re talking time-transcending tunes, this song is hands-down the one that will have every member of the family ready to bust a two-step.
13. "Poison" by Bell Biv DeVoe
When Ronnie, Ricky and Mike decided to form the trio Bell Biv DeVoe, they did so with the idea of creating edgy versions of what New Edition fans knew of them in their younger days. Taking the concept of making music that is “mentally hip-hop, smoothed out on the R&B tip with a pop feel appeal to it,” this song was the perfect starting point. And, to this day, no one anywhere trusts a big butt and a smile.
14. "Electric Boogie (The Electric Slide)" by Marcia Griffiths
Because you know one thing Black folks are gonna do is line dance, this list item is a combination of four of our favorite line dance-accompanied songs. “Electric Boogie” is the OG version of it all and quite possibly the most well-known tune among the generations. It doesn’t even matter how you slide as long as you slap the ground in the process. In the years following its 1976 release, DJ Casper’s “Cha Cha Slide,” V.I.C.’s “Wobble” and Cupid’s “Cupid Shuffle” have joined the playlist.
15. "Atomic Dog / Flashlight" by Parliament-Funkadelic
You can thank your HBCU for this one-two punch of funk. Popularized by Omega Psi Phi and Kappa Alpha Psi, respectively, Atomic Dog and Flashlight will either make you think of your uncle at the barbecue or that one time at a frat party.
16. "Outstanding" by The Gap Band
Well before he introduced himself as Charlie last name Wilson, everybody’s favorite uncle sang alongside his brothers. One tune that brings out all of the synchronous fan singing is this 1982 smash hit.
17. "Da' Butt" by E.U.
Another HBCU classic with a dance to match, this 1988 song from Spike Lee’s School Daze is absolutely ageless and clearly the reason BBLs became so popular.
18. "Real Love" by Mary J. Blige
This song is 30 years old, but that means nothing to anyone who revels in scream-singing this love-searching anthem. It’s the song that truly introduced the world to Mary J. Blige, and let’s be honest, we can’t imagine life without her.
19. "The Way" by Jill Scott
Everybody knows what Jill Scott ate for breakfast that day and will be quick to holler “GRITS!” This 2000 mellow groove endeared Jilly from Philly to Black folks everywhere and quickly landed her on the cookout playlist.
20. "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" by Beyoncé
Name one wedding post-2008 where the bride didn’t toss the bouquet to the tune of this Queen Bey song. This exhilarating pop chart-topper taught family members of all ages how to wave their hands with just the right amount of sass a la Yoncé.
Yes, there are more songs. So many more songs, actually, but this list had to end at some point.

I listened to every Beatles album in order so you dont have to and kept this record as I did. no one asked me to do this and honestly idk how I arrived at it it just sounded interesting after I exhausted the platters who I didnt think to record like this. also im at the point of school where you dont get homework anymore and I miss it so I made a report.
these are graded on a curve, that is, the ratings of each album are calculated in relation to the other albums. prior to this endeavor I had only heard the big beatles songs like in movies and on Wii rockband.
please please me: 3/5. highlight: twist and shout (sorry). lowlight: baby its you. thready ass vocals. leave it to people with talent with the beatles: 3/5. aesthetically identical to prev. highlight: you really got a hold on me. lowlight: please mr postman. why the fuck would you cover this. youre signing up to fail a hard day's night: 2/5. highlight: things we said today. lowlight: sadly, a hard day's night beatles for sale: im gonna keep it real. this sounds identical to albums 1-3 to me and I feel exactly no emotion about it at all. largely inoffensive. 2/5 help!: 3.3/5. highlight: help! killer bass. lowlight: the riff in I need you fills me with a burning, indescribable rage rubber soul: here we begin to experience the epic highs and lows of The Beatles discography. high highs: Norwegian wood and girl. low lows: literally everything else. 2/5 revolver: 3.5/5. these bitches finally woke up! highlight: I'm only sleeping, for no one, Eleanor Rigby is worth the hype, I want to tell you, tomorrow never knows. lowlight: dr robert -- flop attempt at satire. also whatever that one guy was doing to that poor sitar sgt pepper's: I came to a rude awakening when I realized that the wall would not exist without sgt pepper's. humbling. that being said, 0/5. I hated every single second of this. magical mystery tour: epic high following last album's epic low. 5/5. strawberry fields has a BASS DROP??!?!? no skips. I love this album. its such a time capsule as well of like one of the weirdest years in history. i can listen to this album and experience how my parents felt at 16. the callback to she loves you on the last track. I get it the white album: I dont get it. this album tested me like nothing else. I began to flag. I began to question the honor of my quest. I almost shut it off after nearly every song. but let me say: the highs are sweeping. SWEEPING. happiness is a warm gun. blackbird, Helter Skelter, while my guitar gently weeps, back in the ussr, revolution (which is satire which I just realized)... however, the lows are LOW. glass onion is bad; Julia is actually unlistenable (I broke and skipped it); wild honey pie is like getting a transorbital lobotomy; birthday has undone years of my therapist's work vis a vis suicidal ideation. Im so baffled by this I almost want to exclude it entirely. instead I calculated its good song to bad song ratio which landed the album as a whole at a solid D+ (69%)! but that seems like its ignoring the good songs which for any other band even ONE of those would be the song of their career. emotionally the experience was not unlike a bipolar mixed episode. 1/5 yellow submarine: this one was a movie soundtrack. something it has going for it is that it isn't the white album. 4/5 abbey road: yeah. 10/5. I cant even be flippant about this. you live a whole lifetime listening to this one. fine. let it be: set myself up to FAIL with this one. my dad was about to turn 18 the year this came out, which I only bring up because this is the only one of my dads beatles albums I kept. so of course I listened to the record and cried through let it be like a bitch. I like all the studio talking noise. 5/5 for sentimentality
rating overall: 43.8/65, about 66%. but I dont vibe w that honestly. I had a great time doing this and discovered some great music. I also cant ignore their historical significance and the insight it gave me into my parents' youth, which is probably the most interesting thing about the beatles. I choose to recuse myself from assigning a grade and instead, on a pass/fail scale, pass them.
reflection: they were so prolific in 10 years with wildly varying results, but it makes me feel like we need to all create more haphazardly and throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks instead of being so precious about it. because honestly, a monkey at a typewriter with that kind of output WILL eventually write something good. I also think it's the kill baby Mussolini principle in that even if you killed baby Mussolini there would still be the sociopolitical situation which gave rise to Mussolini. so if The Beatles never formed there would've been other band/s who evolved with the upheaval of the 60s who would now serve as this cultural touchstone. but this is what we got and thats quite interesting I think.
takeaway: I cant listen to another beatles song for at least 2 calendar years

PAIRING. mark lee x reader
GENRE. fluff, heavy angst
WARNINGS. major character death, grief
WORD COUNT. 2.4k
SUMMARY. right after his death, mark watches how you cope with the loss
A/N. i saw this one tiktok and it kinda inspired me to write this
// just to let you guys know, reblogs and feedbacks are appreciated !! thank you for reading :D
white walls, white room.
mark scrunched his face, his eyelashes slowly fluttering open, the dark brown iris adjusting the size of the pupils due to the brightness of the walls reflected upon it. a soft groan vibrating from his throat, he assessed his surroundings where nobody or nothing else is present. he looked down to inspect his clothing, hoping that it would give him any clue of this room or space he’s in - an all white outfit. this scene looks exactly like the one in the movies where the characters realize they are dead. except this time, he really is.
THE REALIZATION.
the muffled sounds of cries and sobs rang through his eardrums, triggering a reflex to wake up from the state that he thought was a slumber. he is lying on the hospital bed with the light blue clothing piece, faint light illuminating the space where people are huddled up around him. he waved his right hand in the air to let them - who he later remembered as his family members and friends, know that his eyes are already open. nobody moved even the slightest, the atmosphere being very much dead, scent of medicine intoxicating his mind.
then he saw someone who he holds very dear to his heart - you, enter the hospital room, dropping onto her knees as soon as she saw his state of condition. in an instant, he shot up from his lying position and ran over towards the crying you, shoulders shaking and all. bringing his hands to hold you in his embrace, not even a glance spared by you brought a hundred and one questions to him. why didn’t anybody acknowledge him when he woke up? why can’t you feel his touch?
“mark lee. time of death, 10:23 pm,” the tall doctor with glasses rested on the bridge of his nose announced before leaving the room, holding the clipboard close to his chest. mark gauged the monitor screen next to the bed, the line indicating his heartbeat is no longer showing spikes going up and down - instead becoming a flat line, deafening beep present with it. then he sees himself still laying on the white sheets, eyes still closed and no signs of breathing evident. a surge of panic rushed through his veins.
this can’t be real.
mark rushed into the bathroom, a surprised gasp leaving his lips. his body is semi-transparent, the shape of the toilet bowl can be seen through his left shoulder. his body shakes with terror, slapping himself in the cheeks multiple times just to make sure that this whole fiasco is just a nightmare.
oh my god. no, this is real.
mark stood in the back of the crowd, witnessing the funeral of someone and that someone being him. of course, he’s never expected to get the sight of his own service. his mother is standing beside you, her hands rubbing circles onto your back in an attempt to calm your mourning state. you’re still looking ever so pretty, a black chiffon dress on your body with white pearl necklace on your collarbones and your wavy black hair hanging down your shoulders. not that anybody else would notice, it’s someone’s death after all.
“stay strong, y/n. he will always be in our hearts,” the same rhythm of sentence in tones full of pity being directed towards you. mark’s sister enveloped you into a warm hug despite the chilly atmosphere, whispering comforting words into your ears before getting into the family’s car. you’re not going back home, not yet when you still feel reluctant to let him go.
“why did you leave me?” the only coherent words from your hoarse voice can be heard. mark, who is crouching next to you, is holding his tears back. instead, he sends a sorrowful smile - not that you can see him anyway. is there any way to let you know of his presence?
“goodbye, love. i’ll see you tomorrow. i promise,” you dusted the back of your dress from any dirt or debris, leaving a rose on his tombstone. the thing is, he doesn’t want to part from you. and that’s why his figure is seated beside you in the cab. he grazed his thumb on your knuckles, making you feel tingles rushing through. you pushed the slight thought away, you must be tired to be feeling things.
you slowly opened the door to your apartment, you and mark’s to be exact. the whole house is making those memories make their presence in the back of your head again. the kitchen where you two baked cookies for christmas last year. the bedroom where you snuggled upon his chest, not wanting to start your day just yet. the piano where he sang those cheesy songs for you. the living room where you slow danced at 3 in the morning. his favourite mug resting on the countertop, probably will not be used again. this whole situation is too overwhelming for you. you feel weak.
with each day passing by, you didn’t even miss one without a visit to his resting lot. you would tell him stories of how your day went or something that you read which would made him ponder. the words carved on it are already etched onto your brain.
mark lee. a son, a brother and a loving partner.
the clock hanging on the grey wall has it’s arms stretched out to display the time - two in the morning. you can’t sleep just yet, not having any for the past few days even. dark circles are appearing around your eyes, not yet recovered from the puffiness from all the crying. mark’s heart aches everytime he takes upon your state. he feels very guilty, not that death was his choice after all. it’s simply fate, a cycle of life, a destiny that every single creature on this planet will end up with.
you’ve taken the whole month off work, still feeling ever so helpless. in fact, you can’t even remember the last time you’ve stepped out of the apartment, the night before his passing perhaps? you’ve completely shut yourself out from any interactions - deactivating your social media, not accepting any calls. you just need time to heal.
as if you’re being controlled by some type of mastermind, you shoot up on the balls of your feet, pulling away from the couch. those images of you slow dancing with mark, hands in each other’s holds, your chin rested in the crook of his neck and being ever so engrossed in love are coming back more often now. you trudged to the vinyls arranged neatly on the shelf, picking one before placing it on the turntable - frank sinatra, one of his all time favourites.
holding your hands up at about his usual height, you start twirling around. you can almost see the outline of his smile, his features right in front of you. except, he is. he’s been observing your moves the whole night. mirroring your current position, as if you can really see him, it’s a miracle for him. overjoyed actually, he doesn’t realize the salty tears streaming down his cheekbones and so are yours.
“thank you for coming, dear. it’s a pleasure seeing you in what, weeks?” a laugh escaped the woman’s lips. you reciprocated her hug before stepping into the living room. it’s been a long time since you’ve been here, was it in january? mrs. lee had invited you over for a simple dinner, checking up on how you’ve been. you can see that the family is still struggling over his passing, the way his sister’s eyes are not twinkling as usual makes it hard to cover up the lie.
“you see, this was on his high school graduation day. he was very happy that day, doing all sorts of dances and stuff. finally escaping from hell as he said,” she giggled. she’s been displaying all sorts of memoirs to you, photo albums and photographs scattered on the wooden floor. to be honest, you’ve never seen these before. all smiles mark lee, easy to notice among the crowd. not that he’s changed, he’s still that boy now. mark just sat on the couch - his favourite spot, observing the throwback session going on. if he’s still here, his sister for sure is going to tease the hell out of him.
“he told us so much about you, you know? as if everything reminds him of you, that boy is lovestruck. really,” that sudden confession made your tongue dry, unable to find a perfect response. you were really that special to him.
“drive safe honey, you can come over whenever you want. you know you’re always welcome here, right?” mrs. lee handed you the small box filled with some things you’re going to keep. she kissed both of your cheeks, mr. lee standing behind her giving you a small wave. a small smile crept up onto your face before igniting the engine, turning your wheels out of the housing area.
the netflix show is playing on the television, the faint voices of the characters playing in the background. you’re sitting on the floor, flipping through the photo journal you two decorated throughout your one year of relationship. you can see his little scribbles and doodles, often a little dinosaur symbolising your always grumpy personality.
in one photo, a golden birthday hat is nicely placed on your head with him kissing your right cheek. you remember clearly, a surprise party for you last year. in the following ones, they are mostly candid shots - you blowing out the candles while he looks at you full of love, him eating a portion of your dish while you pout your lips. you would say it was the night of your life, spending it with the guy who stole your heart.
the next page of the journal is a shot of mark taking a photo of you in the park. you suppose it was taken by donghyuck? that one picture of you was stuck as his lock screen wallpaper for a while, you remembered getting so embarrassed over it. mark would give you the same excuse every time you questioned him about it, implying that the sight of you would light up his whole day. cheesy really, but that was what remained as memories of the past, tied neatly in your heart.
the rain trickling against your window eventually made you doze off to wonderland, creating the perfect chance for mark to browse through the journal in your hands. carefully lifting it from yours so that you won’t be stirred from your sleep, he settled down in the space beside your sleeping figure. slowly turning the pages, he smiled fondly at each photo holding a thousand moments that can’t be recreated ever again. some of them would make him giggle. he kneeled down slightly to place a soft kiss on your forehead, making you squirm a little due to the faint touch.
“give him a chance. i’m not saying that you should forget mark but it’s been months, you should live up a little,” yerim’s voice sounding concerned from the other end of the line. perhaps she’s right but you just need more time. but how much longer? you’re afraid you yourself have no specific answer for that enquiry.
you’ve been feeling better by now, welcoming people back into your life and carrying out the same daily routine of yours. going to work, buying groceries, going to the drive-thru and whatnot. of course, the void is still obvious - coming back home to an empty atmosphere instead of him waiting for you on the couch, sometimes dozing off, no more weekend cafe runs. but at least you’re trying your best. you bid your goodbyes before tapping the red button, ending the call. plopping the device onto the mattress, you stared at the white ceiling, deep in your own thoughts.
you should give him a chance. live up a little.
yes, you should.
getting hold of the phone and immediately opening the messages app, you searched for jungwoo’s number. he’s been trying to take you out for dinner for a while now. you still remember his exact words, whenever you’re ready he’s always there, waiting for you. you’re not really sure about that particular question but it wouldn't hurt to give it a try, right?
typing in the words ‘okay, sure’ is already a pressure for you but you still proceeded to press the send button. glancing at the clock showing the time, the notification ping redirected your focus onto the screen.
jungwoo: cool, is tomorrow night okay with you? i’ll drive, of course :)
tomorrow night. okay, tomorrow night.
an elegant red gown is wrapping your curves perfectly, a thin necklace with the seashell charm around your neck while your lips is decorated with the dark red tone, highlighting your poise appearance. hearing the doorbell ring, you tidied up the dresser as your eyes landed onto the picture frame holding a photo of you and mark. a sad feeling crept into your heart but you pushed it away, opening the door to reveal jungwoo in a black and white tuxedo.
you would say that the dinner went well, none of his questions or chatters crossing any borderline. he’s just so polite, even you are amused. feeling comfortable with his presence, the small gap in between is eventually closing down since you’ve learned so much about each other during the other few dates. one night completely changed it for you, him offering you a dance at some event he’s bringing you with.
you observed that his moves are slightly similar to mark’s - not completely of course, mark’s is very unique and very…mark-ish. for the first time ever in the recent turn of events, you flashed a genuine smile. one that is not just for show, one that only comes out when you’re truly elated, one that you only manage to give to certain. mark just observed the scene from a distance, admiring how you’ve managed to find the spark of happiness you once lost.
alas, mark saw his other half become full again with another, her eyes twinkling with the same joy but this time, it’s not him in the reflection.

Golden Boxes
Luke Alvez x Reader
Warnings: None I think
Category: Fluff
Word Count: 1.8k
Author’s Note: this is dedicated to the Luke to my Matt @luke-alvez 🥰 not sure if it's still your birthday where you are but this is my gift to you :) <3
----
The house was filled with boxes and bubble wrap. The plan was to be unpacked for your birthday but it seems things didn't go as planned. Luke had returned form case later than expected and there was the huge storm that seemed to last for days. A week later and all the boxes had arrived and were being unpacked.
Luke’s footsteps echoed through the house as he jogged down the stairs, “baby, have you seen the hammer anywhere ? I need it but I can’t find it” he leaned against the doorway of the kitchen, your back was turned to him as you unpacked the dishes.
“Check the living room” you mumble, turning your attention to the cupboard. Luke shouted from the other room that he found it and ran back up the stairs. The door slammed upstairs, making you shake your head.
“Yeah! Break it before we unpack!” you yell, you can hear Luke’s boisterous laugh from upstairs, he shouted back a sorry.
Your morning was spent in the kitchen because if you couldn’t unpack everything, at least you could have clean dishes to eat from and you know what they say, the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach. It was around lunch that Roxy brushed up against your leg, “hey girl, where’s dad?” your fingers run through her fur as you put some pots in the bottom cupboard. On cue, Luke comes down, “hey, I'm gonna run to the store. We’re out of screws”
“What do you need screws for ?”
“Uh, the bed, I might have cross threaded the other ones” he gave you a tight lipped smile, you chuckled. “Okay, pick up some of the tacks to hang the frames too” Luke comes over and kisses the top of your head before leaving the house.
--
A few hours later, he returned to the house with more bags than screws could be in. “Uh, did you buy out the store? And what took so long?” Luke was already halfway up the stairs when you got to the bottom of the staircase. “No. No,” he laughs and totally ignores your question, returning with the tacks to hang the frames in hand. “Do you need help hanging the frames?” he asks and you shake your head.
“I’ll be upstairs then” and once again, Luke headed up the stairs and back into the room. Half of you wanted to go up and see what he was doing but the other half was much too lazy to walk up the stairs just to check on the man you saw less than 10 seconds ago. You made your way to the living room, Roxy trailing behind you as you sat on the floor and started opening the boxes. The amount of pictures, framed or in albums that you two had was unnecessary. For two people and a dog, it didn’t make sense that at least 4 large boxes had photo albums and pictures frames. Nonetheless, you begin hanging up the frames, rearranging and changing positions until you were pleased with the order. The fireplace was bare, the mantle covered in dust, you couldn't have it. Wiping the dust away, you tumbled through the boxes for pictures that deserved to be front and centre
The first one on the mantle was from your 4th date and the first picture the two of you had together. Luke had invited you to a party that the BAU was having at Rossi’s place and Penelope had taken a picture of the two of you cuddled up next to each other outside. The second one was from your wedding, a picture of your first dance. It felt like only yesterday that you met Luke. It was hard to believe that you were married and had bought a house together. The third one was on you, Luke and Roxy. It was just some random picture that you had taken one morning. The two of you were in bed and you had your phone in your hand when Roxy jumped up onto the bed and amid the confusion, you accidentally took the picture. Neither of you are looking at the camera but you're both laughing.
The sound of something falling pulled your attention away from the photos. “Luke?! You okay ?!” you shout from downstairs, he doesn’t answer so you head up, making your way to the bedroom.
“Love, are you alright?” as soon as your hand reaches for the knob, Luke sticks his head out. “yeah, I'm okay” he smiles, “do you need some help ? I've had enough of downstairs” chuckling, you go to push the door open.
“Oh it’s fine, there’s something propped against the door. I’ll finish up there and come down and help you” Luke shuts the door before you could protest.
“Oh uh okay” mumbling, you head back down the stairs. The banging and thudding did not stop for the next 3 hours. Surely, it couldn't take that long to put together a bed. When it finally stops, he comes down as you had moved on from the living room to the pantry. “Y/n? where are you?!” he called, his footsteps sounding closer with each step. You had headphones in because of all of the noise he was making upstairs and when Luke’s hand rested on your waist, his touch startled you. Your hand coming up and gripping to your chest, Luke held back a laugh. The stupid smile on his face was enough to earn him a small whack to the side.
“Don’t do that!” you shout,
“Sorry,” he chuckled, “I thought you heard me calling”
“Well did I answer ?” you ask him, he shook his head as he watched you from the doorway.
“Anyways, I'm running out to pick up a pizza. Unless you want something else?”
“I’m fine, pizza is good” you smile, Luke leans in and gives you a kiss before walking towards the door. He stops halfway and looks back at you. “The room is still in a mess so don’t go up” he tells you, you nod and mumble okay.
You didn't think anything of it.
It’s not like you were in a rush for the bedroom to be done but it would be nice. The more you thought about it, the more you realized something seemed off. Luke had been upstairs all day and the bed still wasn’t put together?
Walking up the stairs, the sound of your steps echoed through the almost empty house. You stopped in front of the door, half of you wanted to go in and see what was happening and the other half was shouting no in big red flashing lights. There had to be a reason as to why Luke asked you not to go in, he wouldn’t say that for no reason. Which only made you wonder even more. Stepping towards the door, your hand was just about to touch the knob when Luke shouts for you, once again, starling you.
“What were you doing upstairs ?” he was at the bottom of the stairs, looking up at you as you made your way down.
“Looking for the box with the kitchen towels”
“Did you find it ?”
“Must be in the kitchen, I think I saw it earlier” you give him a small smile, feeling kind of bad for lying to him. The half eaten box of pizza was discarded on the floor beside you and Luke, his arm around your shoulder as your head rests on his.
“I have something for you. Let me go get it” untangling himself from you, Luke gets up. Your brows furrow, watching your husband jog up the stairs. “Babe?! Can you come up here?” you follow the sound of his voice up the stairs and into the room. You stop in your tracks when you step into the room. Not only had put the room together but he had also fixed your vanity. The movers didn't wrap it properly and it got damaged, it was the first time you had bought yourself when you moved out on your own so you had wanted to keep it.
“You fixed it” you smiled at him, your hand running around the top of it. “Is that what you were doing all day ?”
“Mhm hm, you looked so sad when it arrived. I couldn't leave it like that” Luke pulls you into his side, his arm around your shoulder once again. He kisses the top of your head, “I take it that you’re happy ?” he asks, turning towards you. “Of course” flashing him a smile which turns into a loud squeal when Luke picks you up, he drops you on the bed and then lays beside you.
“You know I love you right ?” rolling onto your side, your hand cupping his cheek. Luke kisses the palm of your hand, “I know. you know I love you right ?” he smiles which makes you smile too. “That’s not the real gift though” Luke sits up, he pulls out a little box from the bedside table.
“This is for you” he hands it to you. Unwrapping the ribbon, you pull the lid off the box. A gold charm bracelet sat in the box, there were a few charms evenly spaced from each other. The first charm was a little paw print which was for Roxy of course. The second being the palm tree because the two of you went to the tropics for your honeymoon. The third was a tiny hockey stick, seeing that you loved hockey. There were a few more that reminded you of your trips and your time together.
“Oh Luke,” you breathed, he gently picked up the bracelet and placed it on your wrist, attaching the hook and turning it the right way. “Do you like it?” he asks, his hand still holding yours. “It’s gorgeous Luke, thank you” you smile. His phone buzzes, he picks it up.
“Do you have to go ?” you ask him, hoping that it wasn't Emily telling him that they had a case. Luke shook his head and showed you his phone instead. the clock had just changed to 12, the beginning of a new day, your birthday.
Luke’s hands cupped your face as he leaned in, his lips inched away from yours, “happy birthday mi amor” he pressed his lips to yours. You know he could feel your smile through the kiss, “thank you” you mumbled, as your arms wrapped around him and pulled him back into bed with you.

Gale Reviews: ML season 4 episode 12 Crocoduel
(Spoilers below)
-So Kitty Section is playing. I gotta say... the outfits do not look as good as they did in the dark. I cant take them seriously with the little cat gesture. Im chuckling
-Oh look Zoe is there.
-That JULROSE HUG IS GOOD S***
-But Marinette isnt there for some reason.
-Luka thinks its his fault.
-Rose sweetie, I love you but no.
-Luka looks so sad... Okay no cap. This is kind of relatable. Look at them developing Luka.
-"I cant tell him Marinette is super embarrassed." Well yea, those outfits do not look good in the daylight. Except Ivans. THAT BOY IS STYLING
-Okay so Zoe being there is nice but it just reminds us that MARINETTE WAS FINE SEEING LUKA EARLIER! (Im sorry this plot hole really f***ing annoys me) (not gonna impact the score. Just need it to be known.
-So They plotting to have marinette and Luka talking again. by throwing Luka and Juleka a party. Cause their birthdays
-Out of context, them being happy adrien isnt there sounds REALLY bad.
-Juleka doesnt seemed sold on the idea...but JULROSE CHEEK KISS.
-Marinette Figured that out in like 20 seconds.
-"Luka loves me but I love Adrien!" just gonna memorize that line
-But Alya is right, they do need to talk
-Marinette does have a point tho. She doesnt want to hurt his feelings. You know, Marinette does care about his feelings and doesnt want to hurt him but she avoids actually talking with the person because she believes she is sparing their feelings.... HOLY S*** THE PARALLELS TO LADYNOIR.
-Marinette stealthed in a garbage can... HOW CAN PEOPLE HATE HER?!
-Marinette is putting a lot of unintentional pressure on Juleka.
-Okay so I really like this scene with Juleka and Luka. it is a good brother sister moment. Luka knows she was hiding something and cared to ask.
-JAGGED JUST SHOWED UP!
-And Jagged not noticing his daughter... dude not cool.
-And Anarke is here! Time for PARENTAL SMACK DOWN
-Jagged is not subtle
-Jagged dove out the window! The man is trying to be a decent dad now. So I will give him points for trying. and 3 points for that landing
-Poor juleka. She has so much pressure on her. And Luka looks so giddy. (or as giddy as his character model will allow)
-Juleka is standing there... the guilt... poor girl. Marinette why did you make her go through that.
-And the plan obviously backfired. SO LUKA IS GONNA GET TARGETED NUMBER 3!
-What akuma would he have he had anyway? I wonder if its like tear drops on my guitar
-Wow... Um that was touching. The group showing they care about Luka. That is sweet and prevents an akuma. NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO SALT ON THEM TODAY.
-Shadowmoth just like "They are teens.. SOMEONE WILL BE DEPRESSED"
-Now Shadowmoth focused on Juleka.
-Wait... doesnt Juleka have a charm at this point?! THE AKUMA WOULDNT HAVE WORKED? Yeesh the plotholes in this.
- Marinette comforted Juleka. It is still cute
- Jagged stone showing up to his kids party.
-Shadowmoth mothblocked twice.
-Everyone is shocked that Jagged stone is their dad. And Hawkmoth is going for attempt number 3
-AND FAILURE. Shadowmoth keeps getting dunked on. Even shadowmoth realizes it
-"Why do you think your dad loves luka more" Sees Dad give son gift and not to tell Juleka. NOT EVEN 10 SECONDS
-And Jagged proves he is an awful dad... And I got my hopes up.
-Shadowmoth you tried that already
-Marinette channeling her angry gremlin energy to yell at him. I love it
-plot twist HE ISNT A BAD DAD! The gift was for Juleka! And he was trying to be subtle. WELL PLAYED JAGGED. you escape my wrath for now. BUT SO HELP ME... I WILL BREAK YOUR FACE IF YOU MAKE HER CRY.
-Shadowmoth's consistent failure makes me laugh
-The album that caused their seperation? Oh damn
-Shadowmoth is like "FINALLY A DIVORCE!"
- Wait... the item broke as it was getting akumatized?! HOW DOES THAT WORK?!
-guitar villain vs CAPTAIN HARDROCK! AKUMA FIGHT! PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING. PLEASE DONT MAKE THIS BORING!?
-I love this already. Also Alya is acting to get a distraction.
-Ladybug arrives. And they are fighting...
-Adrien is make up first and safety second.... I love him so much
-Oh wow CANON is not nice to Ladybug. (thank you I will be here all week)
-CHIMNEY CHAN!
-Chat noir saving Ladybug... a nice change of pace.
-Ladybug doesnt even know she is already in love with him. (Ladynoir banter at its finest.)
-Chat noir... you have a jetpack power up.
-SKY FIGHT!!!!
- oH MAN THIS FIGHT Looks fun
-Shadowmoth is so done already.
-And ladybug learns the lesson of the day... Talk it out.
-Well that was suspect. (so help me if Luka figures it out...)
-JULEKA HERO DEBUT TIME!
-ROARR!
-I love the purple tiger. He really brings out the wild side
- The transformation is great. I love it
- Chat noir happy to meet another cat hero.
-THEY HAVE A SPACE POWER UP! WHY DID HE NEED TO LAUNCH THEM?!
-Oh.. that is interesting. It has to be put together for the akuma to come out. Interesting.
-Chat noir is clutch today.
-Thats where the tape comes in.
-OH HER POWER IS Collision?
-So its like... a Super punch? Neat.
-And now that it was all together it could be destroyed.
-They almost died in the air.
-So many people almost died.
-Oh neat two charms in one!
-Juleka spoke up! Oh no. I LOVE HER EVEN MORE NOW!
-And father daughter moment is cute.
-Now for Luka and Marinette finally talk.
-And they both agree to be friends
_____________________________________________________________
Overall 8 out of 10. (Not including the Plot holes. with plot holes included. 7 out of 10)
I will say this, Great episode for the Couffaine family. All of them got some Development. (well anarke was a bit lacking but still)
Juleka was MVP. And I am glad Marinette and Luka are friends.
It was cute and the fight wasnt boring. I think they could have done a bit more with it. But it was fine. The comedy was on point.

2021.02.16 1st talk session of Meguro Rock-May-KanGIG at Zepp Yokohama
Zepp Yokohama is a such a nice venue, I really hope we will get to see dir play there live properly!
The concert recorded at Meguro RockMayKan was great! The setlist surprised me quite a lot (especially encore!!!)! And I think that was the smallest stage I ever saw dir on!😆 the footage definitely deserves a separate entry and I don't want to spoil anyone if they go to next events.
After the concert film screening staff quickly prepared the stage, bringing two long tables and four chairs, they also placed a water bottle at each seat.
Punctually (thank you for not repeating Nagoya's situation😆), at 3:30 Fujieda came on stage and started with greeting everyone, and asking us to greet the band members with applause.
After a moment of uncertainty (even as my heart was almost set it will be Kyo) Die came on stage with Kyo after him.٩( ˆoˆ )۶
They both looked super classy. Die had a dark grey suit with a long jacket, his usual award winning hair and wore sunglasses.
Kyo had a black jacket (with a round Chanel pin) and shirt, green hair, he wore glasses (not sunglasses).
When they sat (Kyo stood in front of the chair first until Fujieda gestured them to sit) F asked them to introduce themselves.
D: ども、Dieです
K: 京です
...and then F announced 'today is Kyo's birthday!' and a birthday song melody began to play😆
Kyo turned on his murder face glaring at Fujieda who happily observed 'oh what's this song?'😂
The soft Happy Birthday melody got then a guitar joining in and Takabayashi came on the stage carrying a small strawberry shortcake (with a chocolate message おめでとう京さん) which of course he placed in front of Kyo.
We couldn't sing but we clapped.
Kyo snatched a strawberry and popped it in his mouth. He gestured 'throat slashing' looking at Fujieda😂
And then ate another strawberry🍓😂
F: the song was made by Die.
K: (only interested in the cake) Could I get a fork?
(staff went to get him one)
F: how do you feel? (about your own birthday)
K: I don't care.
The fork arrived and Kyo literally dug in right in the middle, scooping a huge piece he put whole in his mouth.
Fujieda wisely left Kyo to his cake then and started talking about RMK footage. Die said they had hard time deciding on a tour or events like this in COVID situation. They also mentioned the secret show in 2009 was held in RMK.
Next Die talked about how nice it was to rehearse and play together with the band, first time since March, he was happy about the show, creating sound together as 5 people.
F: did you finish eating K?
K: yup
(there was last 🍓 left (out of 4 big ones), he ate about 25~35%?)
F: then tell us about recording the RockMayKan show!
K: the place was very narrow.
F: anything else?
K: Not really.
But then he added more, that as it has been a while it felt like the first day of the tour.
F: was there anything that was difficult? Was a struggle?
K: when recording I can do it at my own pace, I can do one song when I want, but that day it was back to performing over 10 songs all at once, it was tough, hard on my throat, energy/stamina wise.
But at the same time it was exciting, meet with other members, play music together, that was nice.
F: 2019 was filled with shows, it was busy, then things changed. So after a break to see an audience again got me nervous, in a good way.
Next F said had would like to talk about the release of Oboro.
D: what do you want to know?
F: so the song is not out yet, any hints?
D: it's gonna stay a secret for a bit more.
F: the 2nd track is TDFF?
D: (interesting letters ???didn't catch exactly) it's a powerful song.
F: how is Oboro for you Kyo?
K: quite fresh/refreshing
F: really?!
D: especially the video
...but then Kyo just burst with a whole speech how Fujieda always ask something and when he gets an aswer he didn't expect he doesn't react well, just says what he wants, is not listening to what Kyo says and... it went for a while😆
Next F moved to the topic of the merchandise and asked the band members which items they like.
K: the big badge, before the big pick was huge, shouldn't the badge be like this size (showing about 20cm with his hands). It bothered me from when I saw it. Isn't it just normal?
in the end they agreed it's just 'a bit big' 😂
F: how about for you, D?
D: the rubber key chains?
F: they got sold out very quickly, sorry to fans about that.
D: they are cute. And I like the wristbands too. The color combinations are nice.
T: the badge has the old band's logo, it brings me back
D talked about old times when artists made stickers like that, with logos, to put on their equipment, they worked a bit like business cards, he said he still have some at home.
T picked the rechargeable heat pack.
K: so it's to be used instead of heat packs? (ホッカイロ)
F: uh, it's already warm.
D: huh? Show me? (F passed it to him) it's like a phone that gets hot when charging.
Next they moved on to fans questions. ("~~" is a question from fans they read)
K (unusually picks the first question super fast): "what's your favourite cake?"
K: Well, the strawberry shortcake is good, but this one doesn't have strawberries inside, just some jam, it should have strawberries inside too.
(F so dead😂😂😂)
F: "what's your best or bad memory connected to birthdays?"
K: at a concert somewhere, it was quite long time ago, I got a present all wrapped and in a bag from a silver accessories brand I liked, so nicely wrapped, I opened it and it was empty, isn't that really strange? I looked at the attached letter and it said the person is keeping the item for themselves. It annoyed me so much, the worst bd memory ever.
☹️
F: how about you D?
D: it's not exactly bad memory, but many band members have birthdays in February, in the past when we were still giving each other presents Toshiya and I had to think what to get for 3 people, it was always tough. We stopped that at some point.
T: "any memory/story about China Town?"
D: I like China Town
T: do you go often?
D: sometimes. But only to my favorite restaurants. (?? Talked more about the stadium?)
T: do you usually order the same thing?
D: Mabodofu, the spicy version
(then I think he said something like there's no point in overdoing spicyness, it's not healthy??)
K: I don't know which restaurants are good so I get annoyed. I don't know what decides it's a good one or not.
F: I don't go, but I'd like to.
then they talked about the types of Chinese food and food they tried when in other Asian countries.
K: when we were touring in the US I ordered Chinese abd it was terrible, it was all bad. The egg soup was all clumpy, so bad.
D: "any stories about RockMayKan?"
D: honestly I don't have good memories with this venue, when with a previous band we played together with more senior bands and they took over the dressing room, we couldn't use it, and we also had to greet all senpai musicians.
K: remember when Shinya sat on the lockers? Like on top of the 170cm lockers?
D: was it in Nagoya?
K: he's done his make up there, like a cat or something
D: Shinya climbed a locker and made a space for himself there
K: He's not exactly human. Normally you would not even consider climbing a locker...
D: we usually did our make up on the stairs, didn't use changing room. When we played at RMK as dir for the first time I saw 'this is the changing room!'
He also talked about how the hair spray used by all the bandomen would stink up the whole place 😂
F: "what do you usually wear to sleep?"
K: just underwear. Doesn't matter if it's summer or winter I want to feel the towel like fabric, I use towel cloth for my bedding, I want my whole body to feel it so there's no point in wearing pajamas.
D: at home...wait you mean my home or my family house? At my parents' I always wear the pajama my mum got me, currently the Mickey Mouse one. I only have that one there.
K( with sudden interest): can you draw it?
D: it's about this big, quite big print. The one I wear at home, it wasn't sent by my mum.
K: not Mickey one??
D: that's Nightmare Before Christmas.
K: Disney theme?
D: this one has a face in the front.
K: do you change characters (for pajamas) every year?
D: this year it's Nightmare.
Next was something they wanted to say to F. K chose to comment on his haircut, because it's asymmetric K is bothered that it will end as an uzumaki in the back. They talked more about F's style.
F: "I'd like you to tell us about your costumes you wore for RMK show".
D: I wanted something motovating so red colour.
K: I had no special reasoning, just what I wanted to wear then.
D: "have you gotten any food delivery?"
He said he only got it once or not much, I think he said he's not fond of shops that don't do it properly, but when recording it's good???
F: Shinya said he orders Uber almost everyday.
K: I only got Uber once.
F: what did you get?
K: Burger King. I quit McDonalds. After eating Burger King I can't go back to McDonalds.
They talked about sizes of burger here?? Whooper versus Junior Whooper?
F: So McD is not good?
K: the meat taste is different. McDonald now tastes like trash.
F: what about the Mc fries, when they get a bit soft.
K: not only a bit. Gross.
D: in the US we usually also have some American staff, when we had some time and we went to eat out, it was funny, American staff went for sushi, Shinya went for McDonalds.
F: was it last time?
D: no, quite some time ago.
F: when did you eat McDonalds the last time?
D: I also don't eat it, it's been some time already.
They talked more about the food, some restaurants D liked in the US (didn't catch the name🙃 but in Sacramento?), then F talked more about event schedule and the time was over.
Last comments from the band members:
Die: From today the new series of film screening starts, thank you for coming to the first day. So well... the band is working on the new album while coming to the events at the same time, we're working on creating a great album. Please come amd enjoy the events.
Kyo: I don't have a special thing to say. Many of you will be coming to few or many events and will end up with many t-shirts, you can do whatever with them, even use them as a doormat, there are many ways to use them, no problem for the whole year.

Once upon a time in Hollywood, there was a smart young woman named Y/N. She had always been ambitious and very determined so she knew she wanted to be an actress at a very young age.
When she was 16 she started running after her dreams. Coming from a poor neighborhood in Los Angeles, she’d take the bus every day after school and go to Hollywood, distributing resumes at every set she could find, hoping to get any type of work that could bring her closer to her dream.
The chance came a few months later when she was hired to be the director’s assistant. Her work consisted of getting coffee, organizing his table, staying with him while filming and distributing the scripts to all the cast members.
He was directing a sitcom and one day the main actress didn’t show up for the filming, realizing that the two of them looked alike, he asked Y/N to take her place during that day.
She did such a good job, that the following year he called her asking if she would be interested in taking part in a movie.
That was the first of many jobs, 10 years had passed after that. It was 1991 and Y/N was one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood, any movie with her name on, joined countless people in cinema lines just to see it.
She didn’t just make movies and series, but she extended her career, taking part in some modeling jobs for major brands and appearing in video clips.
That’s how she met Steven Tyler, the infamous vocalist of Aerosmith. She had said in an interview that Aerosmith was one of her favorite bands and got surprised when the band’s manager got in touch with her a few days later asking if she would want to take part in a video clip of theirs.
Doing small talk before the footage they found out they had the same zodiac sign, Aries. After that the two of them got really along, Steven invited her to have dinner with him and his wife and soon all of them became good friends.
That’s how she ended up here, on March 26th in front of his mansion, a bottle of expensive wine wrapped as a gift in one hand while the other rang the doorbell.
“Y/N! Come in!” It was Steven’s wife.
“Hello, Teresa, how are you?” She hugged her.
“I’m fine!” She smiled tenderly at Y/N.
There was rock music blasting from the speakers sprawled around the living room, where lots of people were dancing and having fun together. Steven was known for having many friends.
“Ste!!” She shouted, lifting her arms to get a hug from the man.
“Y/N! I’m happy that you came!” He hugged her while smiling.
“Happy birthday!!” She let go of him. “Here, I brought you a gift.”
“Ohh, this is one of my favorites!” He smirked checking out the bottle. “I’ll take it to the wine house before someone decides to drink it.” He gave her a small smile, turning around.
That’s when she saw him. He was talking to some people, his hair half-covered by a blue bandana. He was already looking at her, smiling in her direction when their gazes met.
A shiver ran through her body at that moment. He was beautiful, an adjective she hardly used with men. But damn, she had never seen a man like that before. Everything on him looked perfect, his beard, his hair, his eyes and the shape of his face.
He lifted his beer in her direction and she gave him a small smile, contemplating if she should go and try to talk to him. However, a friend of hers showed up, blocking her plans.
After a few minutes of talking her friend walked away, but the ginger man had disappeared. Walking towards the kitchen she got herself a beer and went to the backyard where some people were smoking, including Steven.
“Can I have one?” She asked, stopping beside him.
He handed her the cigarette, without saying anything. The two of them just stayed there, looking at the night sky in silence.
“What’s up?” She frowned, turning to look at him.
“What do you mean?” He looked down at her.
“You’re quiet tonight.” She drank from her beer, still looking at him.
“That makes two of us.” He smiled at her.
“Fair enough.” She grinned. “You go first.” Y/N pointed at him with the bottle while taking the cigarette to her lips.
“I was just thinking… I’m already in my forties.”
“Annd?” She prolonged the question, raising an eyebrow.
“I thought I’d be dead by now.” He said giggling, making her laugh as well.
She shook her head. “Quit using it and I’m sure you’ll live a very long life, Tyler.”
“I’ll try, I’ll try.” He puffed some smoke. “What about you? What’s going on that little head of yours?” He touched her forehead with his index finger, giggling at his own gesture.
“There’s a guy inside…”
He raised an eyebrow, instigating her to keep talking.
“He seems familiar.”
“How does he look like?”
“He’s ginger, with a bandana and leather jacket.” She dragged some smoke.
“Oh, that’s Axl. He’s from Guns n Roses.” He threw his cigarette on the pavement, stepping on it.
Realization took hold of her face. “Oh yeah. Paradise City! I remember now.”
“Did he catch your eye?” He asked smirking.
“You know how I am. I’m weak on the knees for a ginger.” She smirked back.
“Let’s go inside then, I’ll introduce the two of you.”
She followed him inside the house, putting out the cigarette in an ashtray she found on the way.
They found him in the kitchen, putting some punch on a red plastic glass nearby the counter.
“Axl!” He shouted over the music, stopping nearby the man. “There’s someone here I’d like you to meet..”
Fuck, Steven. You really know how to be discreet. She thought to herself.
“Axl, this is Y/N.” With a hand on her back, he led her closer to him. “Y/N this is Axl.” He grinned at them.
“Nice to meet you.” Axl said, extending his hand for her to shake.
She shook his hand giving him a small smile.
“I was just telling Y/N that you guys released a new album this year…” Steven looked at her.
“There’s two of them actually.” He answered while taking a sip from the punch.
“So I’ve heard! But I didn’t get the chance to listen to them yet.”
“Yeah, they’re pretty recent… Did you listen to the previous ones?”
“I did! They’re quite impressive, I must say.”
He smiled at her. “I’ve seen some movies of yours too.”
“Oh, did you? What did you think of them?”
“They’re… quite impressive.” He mocked her while grinning.
She giggled.
“Ste, can you help me with something?” Teresa showed up, hugging Steven from the side.
“Of course my darling.” He hugged her back. “Sorry guys.” Giving them a small smile he left with Teresa.
“Punch?” He asked seeing that her bottle was empty.
“Yes, please.” She placed the bottle on the counter.
Axl handed her a glass, their fingers brushing against each other when she took it from his hand, making a strange electricity run through their bodies.
“Do you live here? In L.A I mean.” She asked before taking a small sip of the beverage.
“I do, even though I’m never at home. I’m out on tour now, came back just for a few weeks.”
“It must be really tiring to be always traveling.”
“Well, it is, but it’s worth it. After all I get to do what I love.” His eyes shined while he spoke and she smiled at his passion.
A tall guy came to the counter trying to get some punch for himself, making the two of them move.
Starting to lead him towards an adjacent living room, she asked. “Have you always wanted to be a singer?”
“No really, my family is very religious so I started singing in the church’s choir. Then someone told my mother that I could sing and she made me take classes almost every day. It was very exhausting, but it made me realize that I actually liked to sing.”
Arriving at the room, nobody was there and the music made itself lower, allowing them to talk in a normal volume. They sat on the purple velvet couch.
“I would’ve never guessed. And are you still religious?”
“I mean, I don’t go to church anymore, but yeah, I’m still very religious.”
She nodded drinking from her glass.
“What about you? Have you always wanted to be an actress?”
“Yes! I remember being 3 or 4 and sitting in the living room, I’d point to the TV and tell my mom that I wanted to do that.” She smiled with the memory, her eyes getting a different glist.
“That’s a sweet memory.” He smiled at her.
And so they carried on with the conversation, talking about their favorite things and their ambitions, never letting an uncomfortable silence fill in. Even if they were sure that if the silence set in it would not be uncomfortable. The two were too comfortable with each other for this to happen.
Axl was leaning against the couch casually, his legs spread open while S/N had removed her high heels and was sitting with her two legs sprawled on top of the couch.
“And how did you end up in Los Angeles?” She asked.
“Well, when I was 16 or something, this boy from my school, he’s my rhythm guitarist now, he started a garage band with some other dudes and asked me to be their vocalist.”
He paused getting closer to her.
“In the beginning, I was very shy, there would be days where I’d literally leave before I could sing anything. But after some time I got used to it and eventually realized that it was nice to rehearse with them.”
“However the band didn’t work out and when Izzy graduated high-school he moved to L.A, he said he’d start a band here. He asked me to come with him, but I was kinda scared of coming to a big city like this, so I stayed in Lafayette.”
He looked around, realizing that the music had stopped. Now that he thought about it, he hadn’t listened to anything for a good while. “I think we’re the only ones who are still here.” He giggled.
“No shit! What time is it?” She touched his arm, turning it towards her so she could see the time on his wristwatch. “Fuck, it’s almost 5 am.”
“Wow. We should go then.”
“Yeah!” Getting up she got her heels and purse and followed him through the house.
There were some people passed out in the living room and Steven and Teresa were in the kitchen, nearby the sink, talking quietly.
After saying their goodbyes Axl and Y/N exited the house. The cool breeze involved their bodies, even though they could see the sun starting to shine on the horizon.
“Did you come driving?” He asked.
“No, I got a taxi actually.”
“Come, I’ll give you a ride then.”
They got into the car and Axl started driving slowly down the street. “Where should I take you to?”
“I live in Venice.”
“Alright then.” He turned right in a bifurcation.
Checking the interior of the car, Y/N realized it was a convertible one. She gasped. “It’s a convertible! Open it up, please!”
He giggled pressing a button that opened the bonnet. “Why are you so impressed? I’m sure you have at least three of these in your car collection…”
“I don’t have a car collection. I don’t even have a car” She turned around on her seat. The bonnet was fully open and she enjoyed feeling the breeze on her hair.
“Why not?” He frowned, looking at her for a brief moment.
“You’re gonna laugh at me.” She sat still on her seat, placing her feet on the dashboard.
“I promise I won’t.”
“Fine… I don’t know how to drive.”
“Wait. What? But what about all those movies where you were driving?” He looked at her, trying to see if she was joking.
“I wasn’t really driving, silly.” She giggled.
He laughed along.
“Anyway, you were telling me about how you ended here.”
“Oh yeah! So, Izzy came to L.A and I stayed for two more years. I got a job and stuff, but I was always getting in trouble. I’d spend the night in jail and they’d let me go in the morning ‘cause it wasn’t a big deal. But then I got in trouble one more time and they told me they’d arrest me for real if they got me again. So I realized I should leave the city.”
“Hmm, so you’re a bad boy…” Y/N smirked.
“I guess so…. But you’re no saint yourself! You’re not best friends with the press…”
“Well...yeah! The problem is that I don’t know how to be politically correct, I just know how to be me, and people don’t usually like when you give them your honest opinion.”
He looked at her and saw that she was looking through the window.
“On top of that, I have a high tendency of not giving a fuck… I like to live, you know? I like to go out and enjoy every moment, I like to live in the present. But apparently, you’re a bad influence if they see you leaving a club at 3 am every weekend.”
With every word she said, the more he wanted to know about her. She was so much more than what he had thought.
It was a long drive to Venice and accompanied by the soft music playing on the car radio they talked all the way, never getting tired of each other’s voice.
“That’s my building.” She pointed to a big white building in front of the beach.
“Fully delivered.” Axl said smiling, stopping the car in front of it and turning around to look at her.
“I really liked spending time with you.” She smiled.
“Do you think we could do it again on a date?” He asked expectantly.
“I’d love that! What about Friday?”
“Friday’s good for me. I’ll pick you up at 7 pm.”
“Okay.”
The two of them just stayed still, looking at each other without saying anything.
“Is it too early for me to kiss you?” He asked smiling.
“I don’t know. Why don’t you try it?” She smiled back.
And so the two of them leaned in, involving each other in a quick kiss that turned into a passionate one.
After a few seconds, she pulled away, catching her breath and opening the car door.
“Goodnight, Axl.”
“Goodnight, Y/N.”
Little did they know that this was the beginning of a beautiful love story. Full of struggles and problems but that eventually worked out. They found a way of accepting their differences and getting along in a way that few couples could do. And after many years people still talked about them, after all, they became the most iconic 90s couple.
